ex-presidet led APU comeback

Glenn A. Olds, the former Alaska Pacific University president who led the school back from financial ruin, passed away March 11 at his home in Sherwood, Ore. He was 85.

Friends and family celebrated Olds at a memorial service April 2 in the Atwood Center. Beautiful flowers, including pink and yellow roses, were handed out to all attendees. The choir from St. John’s Methodist Church performed and campus chaplain Greg Kimura officiated.

Kimura thanked Eva and Linda Olds, wife and daughter of Glenn Olds, for flying up to Alaska for the memorial.

“Glenn believed all knowledge is connected,” said Doug North, current APU president. “Glenn believed education had to make the world a better place. Glenn had his eye on the prize of the greater good.”

Alluring art, rockin’ tunes and cold beer. These were just a few of the things featured at Alaska Pacific University’s Art Forms Festival in early April.

The festival, held in Grant Hall, was organized by APU Outdoors Studies senior Kerri Graham.

“I did it for the love of art,” Graham said. “I wanted to do something for the APU community that has been such an awesome part of my life.”

Graham started her vision of the festival in January. She distributed surveys to students, made posters, wrote proposals and grant requests. She also submitted an ad to the Anchorage Press and was interviewed by the Anchorage Daily News.

“The whole university contributed,” Graham said. The festival received funding from the Liberal Studies Department, student activity fees, the APU student government and Students In Free Enterprise.

Art on display included photographs, liquid ink and mixed media. Graham said more than a dozen students and alumni contributed pieces.

Display of female crucifixion
generates 'ungracious' response

Choron Ryan, an Alaska Pacific University senior religious studies major, canceled her Good Friday exhibit of religious art after some of the pieces to be displayed stirred controversy.

Ryan declined to elaborate on reasons for the cancellation of the event, which was scheduled to be held April 14 in APU’s Jimmy Davis Chapel.

Fliers Ryan created to promote her “Divine Aesthetics” exhibit bore the image of “Christa,” a controversial sculpture of a female crucifixion.

Ryan’s advisor, Greg Kimura, the university chaplain and Liberal Studies Department chair, said Ryan received negative backlash including “ungracious” e-mails and phone calls regarding the event. Ryan said she distributed fliers around the APU and University Alaska Anchorage campuses and a handful of Kaladi Brothers coffee shops in Anchorage.
